How to play Klondike Solitaire
Klondike is the solitaire most people know. A shuffled deck is dealt into seven columns: the first column has one card, the second two, and so on up to seven, with only the top card of each column face up. The other 24 cards form the stock in the top-left corner. Your goal is to move all 52 cards to the four foundations in the top-right corner, one pile per suit, starting with the ace and finishing with the king.
In the columns you build downwards in alternating colours: a red 9 goes on a black 10, a black 4 on a red 5. You can move a single face-up card or a whole run of face-up cards that is already in order. When you move the last face-up card off a column, the card underneath turns over. Only a king, or a run that starts with a king, may go into an empty column.
Draw one or draw three
Tap the stock to turn cards onto the waste pile. In Draw 1 one card turns over at a time, which makes most deals easier. In Draw 3 three cards turn over and only the top one can be played, the traditional harder version. When the stock is empty, tap it again to turn the waste back into a new stock.
Each draw mode keeps its own best score. Every deal has a number: the same number always gives the same cards, so you can replay a deal or send it to a friend with Copy deal link. Odd deal numbers use draw three and even numbers use draw one.
Scoring
Scoring follows the classic Windows standard rules:
- Waste to a column: 5 points. Any card to a foundation: 10 points. Turning over a column card: 5 points.
- Moving a card back from a foundation to a column: minus 15 points.
- Turning the waste back over: minus 100 points in draw one; in draw three the first three passes are free, then minus 20 points each.
- Winning adds a time bonus of 700,000 divided by your time in seconds, for games longer than 30 seconds.
The score never drops below zero. Undo puts the score back to what it was before the move, and the move counter keeps counting.
Tips and strategy
- Turn over face-down cards first. Moves that uncover a hidden card are almost always worth more than moves from the waste.
- Empty columns are precious. Only empty a column when a king is ready to go into it.
- Do not rush cards to the foundations. Low cards are safe to send up, but a 5 or 6 may still be needed in a column to hold a card of the other colour.
- Work the longest columns. The columns on the right hide the most cards, so freeing them early opens up the game.
- Use the hint and undo. Hint highlights a useful move; undo lets you test an idea and take it back.
Not every deal can be won, even with perfect play. When every card is face up and the stock is empty, press Auto-complete to finish the game.
Frequently asked questions
Is every deal winnable?
No. Like real cards, some Klondike deals cannot be won, especially in draw three. The game does not promise that a deal is winnable; try undo or a new deal.
How do I move a card on a phone?
Tap it and it moves to the best legal spot: a foundation first, then a column. You can also drag it. If no automatic move exists, the card is selected and your next tap chooses the destination.
What is the daily deal?
Daily challenge mode deals the same cards to everyone on the same date, one deal per draw mode. Win it to grow your streak.
Can I tell the suits apart if I am colour-blind?
Yes. Every card shows its suit shape in the corner and the centre, so you never rely on colour alone. The Four-colour suits button also gives diamonds and clubs their own colours.
Is my game saved?
Yes. The deal, your moves and recent undo steps are saved in this browser after every move, so a reload continues the same game. Best scores are kept for each draw mode.
